The United States is a democracy. That is, a nation with a government by the people. Every day in the United States there are hundreds of decisions which must be made by the government to keep the nation running smoothly. It would be impossible for the American people to vote on every political issue, so we elect representatives to conduct the complicated business of running our nations, our states, and our towns.
