The Monroe Doctrine

The Monroe Doctrine stated that European interference in the Western Hemisphere would be considered interference in the affairs of the United States. This meant that the American continent would no longer allow itself to be an arena for European colonial activity. With this particular address to Congress, President James Monroe solidified America’s assertion of its sovereign rights in this hemisphere.
