Settling the American West
This program that will introduce students to the settling of the American West, from the 17th century when “the West” meant several miles from the Atlantic Ocean to the early 20th century when all of the land south of Canada from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean had been settled. The unit focuses on the major political happenings — the wars and initiations into statehood — that occurred during this period, but it also addresses the pioneers, their reasons for moving westward, and their experiences once they arrived. Kit includes nine lessons, thirteen transparencies, student handouts, two testing sections, map exercises, class and individual projects, and more. Grades 5-12.
